How To Password Protect your Office Files

Andy Luu Updated by Andy Luu

Note: A file with encryption can only be accessed with a password. Losing the password would mean losing access to the file permanently. Proceed with caution.

  1. With your Office file open, click File then select Info.
  2. Select Protect Document and from the drop-down menu, click Encrypt with Password.
  3. Enter the password and re-enter to confirm. Once you have done so, the file will require a password to access it.
